Water taking over the houses, people found dead, floating; almost 600.000 homeless; more than 148 deaths (as of May 14th) and who knows how many more. That’s what has been happening in Rio Grande do Sul. But do you know what causes a flood?
There are many reasons why that disaster happened, such as clogged drains, bad infrastructure and poor maintenance. However, the main justification for the flood in RS is the climate change, which causes heavy rains and rise of sea level.
Climate changes are caused by human actions that disturb the environment. For example, deflorestation (one of the most effective sources of those variations), pollution of the oceans and the release of CO2 in the atmosphere.
In order to mitigate those catastrophes we need to take some important actions, like reforestation, increase of recycling and reduce the carbon emission by the use of electric cars. Remember: the future of the world isn’t lost yet!
