Breaking News! On the 11th, our ex-president Jair Bolsonaro was sentenced to 27 years and 5 months in a closed regime. Nonetheless, this process hasn’t started recently. It all began on January 8th, 2023.

On January 8th, 2023, Brazil went through a violent attack at the headquarters of the Brazilian government, when more than 4,000 supporters of the former president Jair Bolsonaro invaded the Planalto Palace. They destroyed and vandalized hundreds of items, causing a R$26 million loss. Since then, Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court has sentenced hundreds of participants. However, not all of the people involved were convicted due to lack of violence.

Moreover, other crimes, such as attempted coup d’etat and participation in a criminal organization, led to his sentence. Despite that, his arrest won’t be immediate, and since August 4, Bolsonaro has been under house arrest. Now, there are 60 days to appeal and negotiate a new court sentence for him.

The sentence of former President Jair Bolsonaro makes it clear that no one is above the law. It’s an important moment for Brazil’s democracy, showing that people must take responsibility for their actions. Even if it deepens political tensions, it reminds everyone that justice applies to all, no matter their position.
