The 95th edition of the Academy Awards took place on March 12 at Dolby Theater, Los Angeles. The presenter and comedian Jimmy Kimmel was the host of the event for the third time.
The biggest winner of the night was “Everything Everywhere All at Once”. The film won 7 of the 11 prizes to which it was nominated. This film made history as the third motion picture since the inception of the Academy Awards to win in three different acting categories – Best Actress (Michelle Yeoh), Best Supporting Actor (Ke Huy Quan) and Best Supporting Actress (Jamie Lee Curtis). Michelle Yeoh was the first asian woman to be nominated for the Best Actress award.
In the Best Original Song category, “Naatu Naatu”, theme song of the Telugu-language epic “RRR”, won the award, beating hits from more famous challengers such as Rihanna and Lady Gaga. It became the first Telugu language song to win the Oscars.
John Williams, one of the most known cinema composers, made history again, becoming the oldest person to be nominated, at 90 years old, for his work on Steven Spielberg’s “The Fabelmans”.
The event staged great musical performances, like Lady Gaga singing “Hold My Hand” from “Top Gun: Maverick” and Rihanna singing “Lift Me Up” from “Wakanda Forever”.
Ruth Carter won the Best Costume Design award for the incredible garbs seen in “Wakanda Forever”. She was the first African American woman to win more than one Oscar. She had already won in 2018 as the costume designer for “Black Panther”.
One of the most touching speeches was given by Brendan Fraser, who received the Best Actor award for his performance in “The Whale”. He broke new ground as the first Canadian to win the Oscars for Best Actor.
“All Quiet in the Western Front” was the fourth German film to win the Best International Feature Film category. Besides, it won the Oscar for Best Original Score, Best Production Design and Best Cinematography.
It was the first time in 88 years in which all the nominees for Best Actor had never been nominated before.
Many of those following awards at home notice that a lot of the invitees were wearing a blue ribbon on their clothes. What did it mean? The Words #withrefugees were engraved on the ribbons, as a way of supporting the UN Refugees Agency. The goal was to show compassion and solidarity with people forced to run away from their homes due to war or persecution.
This year, the Oscar had an emergency team ready to avoid another incident like Will Smith slapping Chris Rock onstage, which happened last year. The Academy’s President said that “they were prepared for anything that could have happened during the ceremony”. It seems that it worked!
