The city of Rio is home to some of the most successful soccer clubs in our country. As the 2023 season starts, some fans are worried about their teams while others have high expectations.

Flamengo

One of the most popular teams of our country, is currently in bad shape, having lost every final it has played at the start of this year, including one defeat for its biggest rival Fluminense. The new coach, Vitor Pereira, is being blamed for the team’s current performance and the fans are demanding his resignation. Flamengo boasts a strong squad with star players, yet the team’s morale is low after losing four different finals.

Fluminense

Following a solid last season, Fluminense is in a good condition, winning the “Taça Guanabara” against its rival Flamengo. The team has high expectations for the year, playing the Libertadores cup and having a good squad with many experienced players, all coached by Fernando Diniz.

Vasco

Returning to the elite of Brazilian football, Vasco’s situation couldn’t be worse. The team was eliminated from “Copa do Brasil” after a terrible performance against ABC. Afterwards, the “Gigante da Colina” lost the semifinals of “Campeonato Carioca” playing against Flamengo. In addition, Vasco is running low on finances and probably will not be able to revert its situation and enhance its squad. The team will probably fight to qualify for Sudamericana and escape the relegation zone.

Botafogo

After an average season, Botafogo is currently at the finals of “Taça Rio” and at the group stage of Sudamericana. However, the team is also suffering from financial problems that are disturbing the team’s progress. The “Alvinegro” currently have a mediocre squad that can make watching any match a painful experience. This season, Botafogo will most likely have the same struggle.
