Elizabeth Blackwell (3 February 1821 – 31 May 1910) was a British and American physician, notable as the first woman to earn a medical degree in the United States of America.

Blackwell lived in Bristol.

When she was 11 years old, her father died from a strong fever, and the Blackwell family moved to New York. She became a doctor in 1849. She founded her own hospital in New York. In 1874, she established a medical school for women in London with Sophie Jex-Blake and promoted women’s rights.
