Do you like math? Do you think you learn a lot with it? Do you use it in your daily life?
Well, math it’s a very important subject that has helped human beings since a long time ago. In the past, humans lived in forests and outdoor areas, as they and their technology weren’t as developed yet to construct and come up with houses and buildings like nowadays. Because of that, humans had a lot of contact with nature everyday, knowing more about it and getting used to natural elements.
In that time, people started feeling the necessity of counting and measuring things around them. For example, they wanted to measure rivers, count animals and fruits. After that, humans started organizing things based on seasons of the year and climate changes, creating and noticing the period of plantations, for example. So they started doing methods to help counting.
The time passed and many civilizations emerged, creating their own math strategies, more and more developed. Each one created a group of numbers and symbols. The use of the body was a method too: using fingers, feet and hands to measure things and quantities. We use this type of measuring nowadays too, for example, to measure screens of TVs, smartphones or tablets.
The Egyptian civilization had symbols to represent the numbers. They created their own calendar too. Some cultures used calendars based on seasons or periods of the year, because of the plantations, while other groups used the movements of the moon and the sun to organize the days and years.
The world and its societies developed and created more methods, and answered more complex questions during the years that passed.
After all this evolution of the act of counting things until now, we see the math subject being studied in all schools. Many students ask themselves: “Why do we need to study this?” or “When will I use it?” The answers for those questions are in our daily lives!
Many Brazilians don’t like math contents because it’s too complex, but we need it. Many situations and actions of our lives and routines are related to math. When you go to a restaurant with your friends and need to divide a pizza equally, you are using math. People just don’t notice because it’s natural, it’s part of our whole life, since we are children.
Math is a very important theme and without it, our education, society and world wouldn’t be so developed as it is.
