On Friday, May 5th, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the end of the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency of International Concern. The general-director of the WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, was the one who came to the conclusion, by getting information about the disease from the Emergency Committee. In its 15th meeting, on May 4th, they talked about the reduction of deaths and hospitalization and other sectors.
The Covid-19 is a disease that comes from SARS-CoV-2 virus and can cause many symptoms, such as bad breathing, fever, cough, body hurt and more. It can be transmitted easily, by the nose, mouth, saliva and eye. This disease was first detected in China, in December 2019, and in Brazil, in February 2020.
After 100 thousands of cases registered in Brazil, the World Health Organization declared, on May 11th, of 2020, that the Covid 19 would be classified as a pandemic. With the cases growing up and the world having many deaths and losses, there were new measures and ways of living, like: lockdown, online classes and work, homeoffice, wearing masks, using alcohol gel, buying online, not having a lot of contact with people, and much more. By the research made by WHO, since the pandemic until January 3rd, 2023, there were 655.689.115 cases confirmed.
Scientists and specialists did a lot of research to find vaccines for this disease that changed the world. The vaccines started being administered in January, 2021. According to WHO, 13.073.712.554 doses were administered until January 3rd, 2023 and 5.023.237.819 people are with the vaccine system completed.
The declaration of the end of the Covid-19 Public Health Emergency of International Concern doesn’t mean that the disease ended or disappeared. There’s still the need to take vaccines, be careful and take the measures necessary like the many other diseases that exist. The general-director of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom, said something according to that: “What this news means is that it is time for countries to do the transition from emergency mode to managing COVID-19 along with other infectious diseases.”
This pandemic changed the lives of the population a lot and started changing the routine of the families, adapting for many new habits. Now, the emergency of COVID-19 it’s over and, as Tedros said, the countries just need to start managing the disease like many others.
