The Do-Over, written by Lynn Painter is a hilarious and delightful love story that explores themes of second chances and personal growth. Set in a teen environment, Painter shows her teen readers that sometimes life doesn’t go as planned, and that’s okay. This review will analyze the novel’s plot, character development and underlying themes.

The book follows Emilie, a teenager that loves Valentine’s Day. However, on this particular day, her whole life falls apart. And the worst part is that for some reason she is stuck in some sort of time loop where she needs to relive this day over and over again. The story details Emilie moving to watch her boyfriend, Josh, cheating on her day after day and trying to escape an enigmatic boy named Nick, as she can’t avoid running into him all the time.

Lynn Painter’s writing is engaging and filled with humor, making it easy to connect with Emilie’s character. The author does a great job of capturing the awkwardness and emotions of being a teenager. Emilie grows throughout the story learning that she can’t control everything and that she needs to enjoy life even if it doesn’t go as planned. Sometimes, it is fundamental to adapt to changes as they happen and this book shows its readers why.

The Do-over is a heartfelt exploration of the challenges of growing up, facing one’s mistakes, and embracing the possibility of change. Lynn Painter with her humor makes this book a compelling read for teenagers. I recommend this book for everybody who likes to be in control of everything in their lives, for them to know that unexpected events are normal and we can’t control them.
