The book Heartstopper by Alice Oseman has quickly gained the attention of the public. This sweet and fluid romance brings to light several struggles faced by teenagers in the journey to discover oneselves.

With amazingly drawn comics, the author easily guides the readers through the couple’s story. Charlie, a gay fifteen year-old, meets Nick, a “straight” rugby player. Whilst Charlie develops a deep infatuation, we follow Nick on an inspiring self-discovery and self-acceptance journey. Against all odds, they fall in love and become an absolutely endearing couple.

Apart from the dreamy romance, this book also raises awareness for extremely significant topics such as toxic relationships, homophobia and, further along the narrative, eating disorders. One can easily see the concern and responsibility the author has when writing about such matters, as she even provides help resources in the end of each book. This story and the meaningful way it is told are extremely powerful and necessary. Books like this are crucial to normalize “taboo” topics, such as homossexual relationships, and to start creating the change we want to see in the world.

Therefore, one must observe that Heartstopper is a light and beautiful love story that brings with it serious discussions. It is a book perfect for all ages and for anyone who is looking for a fun and sweet narrative. I absolutely recommend it!
