At the 97th Academy Awards, held on March 2, 2025, the independent film Anora was the night’s big winner, getting five statuettes including the top ones of Best Picture, Best Director for Sean Baker, and Best Actress for Mikey Madison.

Mikey, at only 25, won the Oscar for Best actress with her performance, beating out favorites like Demi Moore (The Substance). Also, the director, Sean Baker, made history by winning four Oscars in the same ceremony, them being Directing, Original Screenplay, Editing, and Best Picture.

Anora tells the story of a young sex worker in New York, and covers topics like fighting for love, survival and honesty. The film stands out for its raw realism, emotional depth, and shows us very humanized characters. Mikey’s moving performance and Baker’s wonderful directing there was no doubt that Anora would be a success.
