Do you know the difference between Father’s Day in Brazil and the USA?

In the United States, Father’s Day began in 1909. The celebration started with Sonora Louise Smart Dodd. She wanted to honor her father, who was a Civil War veteran and raised Sonora and her siblings alone. Father’s Day was officially established on the third Sunday of June by President Lyndon Johnson in 1966. It only became a national holiday in 1972.

In Brazil, it was a little different. The date was established in 1953 by Sylvio Bhering. He decided to create the day to stimulate business in the middle of the year. Like on Mother’s Day and Christmas, Father’s Day was chosen on the day of Saint Joachim, Maria’s father. Later, it was moved to the second Sunday of August.

Despite the differences, both countries celebrate Father’s Day with the family, give them some presents like perfume or clothes and have a lot of fun together.
