The International Coffee Day is celebrated on October 1st with the State Members of the International Coffee Organization and associations worldwide. It’s a date to celebrate the coffee sector, the farmers and the sharing of this product between people.

There are countries that have their own national coffee days, but the ICO decided to implement a unique day on October 1st.

The objective of the date is to form reflection and contemplation of the process of production, from the farm to our cups, which makes us think about how important coffee is to our daily routine.

It brings different topics to be discussed like sustainability and conscious consumption and collaborating which was the theme of International Coffee Day in 2024, with the message “Coffee, your daily ritual, our shared journey”, a campaign that embraces the importance of collaboration during the production, passing by many sectors and people to arrive at the markets, homes and cups.

The campaigns of other years counted with the discussion of topics like: Coffee’s Next Generation, the climate changes challenge and sustainability.

Some fun facts and curiosities about coffee are:

  • Coffee was discovered in Ethiopia by a goat herder in the 9th century
  • Brazil is the largest coffee producer in the world and Finland is the largest consumer
  • There are more than 100 coffee types, but only Arabica and Robusta are cultivated worldwide.

Coffee Day is celebrated to make us see how this simple drink connects people and has a long history until now. It brings the idea of fair trade practice, and the respect to coffee farmers.

I think this special date is essential for people to see and understand the value of this product that is consumed everyday all around the world and connecting people on a global scale.
