A cat’s pads - Maria Eduarda Bruno
By: Maria Eduarda Bruno (Grade 6)
Do you have a pet? Do you know their basic summer care? How about the danger of the pet’s shoes/socks at this time of the year? Well, the first thing you should know is: cats and dogs don’t have sweat glands scattered all over their bodies like us. They are found in the pads and, because of that, the little pet’s shoes/socks are extremely risky. If you thought this would help them on walks during hot days, unfortunately you are wrong. The best thing to do is to take them for a walk at sunrise or sunset. In case you can’t go in this period, you need to stay tuned how the temperature outside is, mainly on the floor. You can test this by getting barefoot and counting 5 seconds on the street. If you can’t bear the heat, then your pet can’t either.
Besides that, it’s extremely important to offer cold water all day, spread wet rugs for them to lie down and fresh up all over the house, apply the animal’s sunscreen in it’s muzzle and ears when you go out, even with the weak sun, and last but not least, pay a lot of attention to their breathing. Unfortunately, they are more fragile than us, so if we don’t watch them carefully they can get in critical and even deadly conditions. Any changes in their behavior and breathing, take them to the vet urgently.
Now you and your pet can enjoy the best of summer in safety!
